This music video's concept is one of natural beauty. It follows a young boy living in a middle-age styled house going out to explore. He then manages to stumble on a bird which he purses across his land discovering various beautiful landscapes that are all natural landscapes. The video is meant to correlate with the calm and peaceful sounds of Bon Iver's song 'Holocene by showing awe striking visual clarity and naturalness. The nature themes may be used to reflect the genre of the song which is partly folk music which is known to be a traditional and old style of music. This can be reflected with the old landscapes sen in the video.
Camera
The camera within the video uses a mixture of close up and medium shots of the protagonist during the verses of the song to focus on his story throughout the narrative of the video. However when the chorus of the song kick in the camera focuses on long shots of sweeping landscapes of the location used within the video. This is done deliberately to give the narrative a sense of structure and meaning with the protagonist reaching more stunning landscapes as the song and narrative progresses.
Editing
The video uses Goodwin's theory of thought beats extensively throughout the video cutting at a beat within the song to make the video flow nicely with the pace of the song. The video itself has very few cuts in the editing. This is probably due to the slow pace of the song itself. This is also reinforced due to the fact that the majority of the shots used within the video are filmed at half-speed to emphasise the environment and actions of the protagonist in a clam and relaxing manner.
Mise en scene
The mise en scene used within the 'Holocene' video follows the theme of nature throughout the video. The protagonist's jumper which is the most visible piece of clothing on him is made from the natural material of wool. However it does feel like the video itself is more focused on the natural environments that the protagonist visits rather than the protagonist himself.
